It is a special stress laid upon certain words and syllables by means of which the thoughts they indicate are brought into prominence, and is the most essential and necessary thing to consider in this connection. In many cases we depend upon it entirely for the meaning of a sentence, and frequently a form of words can be caused to convey two or more entirely different meanings by its use or abuse. An amusing example of the danger of false accentuation occurs in the sentence " And he said, saddle me the ass, and they saddled him."" We need not go further to prove its importance. 168. Logical accent applies not only to single words but also to phrases and whole sentences. A whole clause, though internally bearing its own quantity and verbal and grammatical accent, may be considered as relatively accented or unaccented with respect to other clauses; e.g. "Tush, say they, how should God perceive it," or "If his wrath be kindled, yea but a little, blessed are all they that put their trust in him." 169. In the pronunciation of vowels, then, there are four things that a cultured speaker must bear in mind, viz.: --(1) Quantity. (2) Verbal accent. (3) Grammatical accent. (4) Logical accent. 170. By way of illustration let us take some familiar sentences and see how what has been said may be applied.
