XIX One morning, at the beginning of April, Prosper de la Jugie had walked down into his garden quite early so as to take a bath of the springtide sun heat. He was soon joined by Armand Debierne, just returned from a short journey, and whom the charm of this radiant morning had induced to pay his old friend a visit. Whilst chatting, they wended their steps toward a bower yet deprived of its green shade, but from which could be obtained a fine view over the Loire valley; the warmth of the sun soon proved too ardent a caress though, and reaching a cedar tree, the two friends sat side by side under its shadow. Never does the prosperous beauty of the Touraine country show to better effect than on those lovely April mornings; then does this garden, or rather this orchard of fair France, rejoice one's heart and eyes by the unforgetable harmony of its subdued tints both maidenly and voluptuous. The almond trees had already thrown away their blossoms, but the pinkbloom from the peach trees lighted up the gray surface of the soil, where, here and there, the budding leaves of the vine stocks were discernible. At a short distance from where the two men sat, the apricot trees, the prune trees and the cherry trees spread the enormous bouquets of their white flowers; along the river bank the weeping willows allowed their leafy branches to drag in the quiet current over which a sky of heavenly blue stretched its wide expanse. From the tree clumps arose the merry singing of the larks and the sweet odors of the wild violets, whilst, to complete this limpid and awakening symphony of the spring, tide, one heard in the far away the clear sounding bells of a village church "April, the pride of green meadows--" began to recfte Prosper de la Jugie, whose poetic mania...
