LEVI HEDGE. (1792.) Those who remember the elder Dr. Hedge, are constantly reminded of him by his son, Rev. Dr. Henry F. Hedge. The son closely resembles the father in face, but with more force and variety of expression; in voice, but with greater strength of utterance and flexibility of modulation; in form, but with a larger frame. The father, who was our professor of logic, metaphysics, and political economy, was exact and punctilious to the last degree; but, in an equal degree, just and kind in his relations to the students. Few of us saw him except in the class-room; but when a legitimate indulgence or an act of clemency was desired, we went to no college officer more readily than to him: and in his study his rigidness of manner disappeared. In the recitation hour he imparted no instruction whatever, and gave us distinctly to understand that he regarded the words of the textrbook as preferable--and undoubtedly they were--to the best paraphrase that we could make of them.
