Stephens, director of the Marseilles Observatory and chief astronomer---M0ns. Tisserand, astronomer, --Mons. Hatt. hydrographic engineer, --Mons. Olry, Lieutenant de'Vaisseau, aid dc camp, --and Mons. Garnadlt, chemist of the first class, and observer of' the vegetable system. Such is but a rough sketch of the town of tabernacles and booths which had sprung up as by magic; in a perfect wilderness, in which the Monarch of Siam held his court for half a month. The sea shore extending nearly N. N. VV. by S. S. E. _ on' which the town was situated, had a lovely sand beach without a. rock or any other break for many miles in 'either direction. At the North 31 miles it was abruptly cut ofi by a bold promontory called Hua. Wan--w/uzle's head, which gives name to the whole of that part of the western coast of the Gulf. Nearly East of the French establishment, about four miles distant, is a small island, and to the' N. E. another of larger dimensions and more distant. At the South 10 or 15 miles were lofty mountains; and at the West a very pleasant range but less lofty. The shipping riding at anchor in that beautiful harbor, anticipating. the great eclipse two days before its occurrence, were 15 steamers, two sailing vessels. and a few smaller craft.. Among the steamers were the French transport Sarthe, and gunboat Frelon---the British Gunboats Grasshopper and Satelile--the British Colonial steamer Peiho, which brought Gov.
