In about a minute Flowers nudged me with his knee under the table, which I interpreted to mean, "Bust them." This call for a spurt I answered, but another nudge came for a bigger one. Swift proved to have been misnamed for the occasion, and dropped out of the race first; very soon Nichols collapsed and declared himself skeptical on Flowers' ability to get it at the rate I had struck, and called for a reading back of what he had taken last. Mr. Flowers soon satisfied him that he had taken it correctly. Now, the facts are, that Flowers had reached 267 words on the single minute test, Nichols 240, Swift (then only a practitioner of two years) less than 200. According to the arguments against the minute test, it was only a coincidence that the writers failed to keep up in the order their minute tests indicated fhey would, but I was foolish enough not to be a bit surprised, but rather expected it to turn out in that way, and my surprise would have been in case it had turned out differently. From this and similar experiences, I have arrived at the conclusion that if you show me the man who can write the most in a minute, I can show you the man who can write the most in an hour, or anv number of hours. The opponents of the minute test talk a great deal about average speed. Let us look at that phase of the subject. With this article in view, I turned back to an afternoon's work that I had occasion to remember as being verv fast, and made as fair an average as T could of the amount of work done per minute, and it made only 144 words a minute for the 240 minutes comprising the afternoon.
