Artificial Sand Fills in Water (Hardcover)

Across the whole world projects of various sizes are executed in which the construction of a sand fill in water forms a part. These projects, among others, include the building of dams for the purpose of wave reduction or for the benefit of (tidal) closures, the formation of artificial islands or coastal extensions, the covering of pipelines and the foundation of submerged tunnels and caissons. In the Netherlands experience has been gathered on a great number of these types of project especially in the large ports, pipeline covering in the North Sea within the framework of the Deltaworks for the defence against storm surges of the southwestern part of the Netherlands.;Additionally Dutch contractors, research institutes and consultancy forms have been involved in the research, design or construction of a great number of projects abroad. These varied experiences are based on in depth research; especially within the framework of the preparations of a number of Delta-closures to be executed with sand. These involved research into the literature and theory development as well as experiments on a laboratory scale and prototype site observations. After the completion of the Deltaworks it seemed important not to leave this knowledge scattered over a great number of study reports and design and evaluation notes, but rather to achieve a user-friendly compilation of the data and experience. As a result of this aim this manual has been produced.
