Excerpt: ... WILMAY CHAPTER I Philip Amory was only twenty years old when he decided to leave England. He had no relations to consult, and his guardian never opposed him in anything; but his friends--of which in spite of his eccentricities he had many--were indignant. He was leaving Cambridge in the middle of his career there, and the career had promised to be very brilliant. He was going to Queensland, and Queensland is a long way off. I told him that if he went there he might just as well die, and on the whole I should prefer the death. What made it more irritating was that he never gave one solid reason for going to Queensland, or even for leaving England at all. A man's friends can hardly allow him to make a fool of himself without providing themselves with some plausible explanation, and accordingly we said that there was a woman in the case. It was not a very satisfactory explanation, because, if there was a woman in the case, we certainly did not know who the woman was. At first he wrote to me frequently. Then at the end of six months of silence I got one long letter from him, of which the first half was all about horse-breaking, to which he seemed to have given much attention, while the remainder was occupied with a proposal for a new reading in a passage in one of the "Agamemnon " choruses. To this letter there was a postscript, "I have married." He did not say whom he had married, or give any other information. I wrote to inquire and to congratulate, and sent him silver candlesticks. He never answered that letter or acknowledged the present. I had no further news of him until a little more than a year afterwards, when I happened to see in a paper the announcement of the death of his wife.
