They count alike, upon insidious sophistries to mislead public judgment, upon bold and persistent denials to avert investigations, and upon intimidation and death to'suppress evidence and prevent complaints. So prevalent and continuous is the exercise of terrorism, and so powerful the influences of interest, that many of our friends are induced to contribute their aid in concealing vital facts from public information. And not unfrequently (we say it with humiliation ami grief) do those whom our votes have elevated to official station not only fail to use the power we have given them for our protection, but, unable to withstand the influences surrounding them, or beguiled by the ever-receding phantom of conservative affiliation, they affect to officially know little cause of complaint. Most of our people are landless and homeless. This was the condition in which they were left when freed; this is the condition in which it is the deliberate purpose of the owners of the soil that they shall remain. They occupy the cabins of the employer, who thus controls their poor abodes as completely as he does the premises occupied by himself. They cannot keep arms to defend themselves, because their cabins are closely watched, visited, and searched. They cannot organize and act together for similar reasons. It is an offense to sell or give a colored person any weapon; it is a crime for a colored person to keen or carry any weapon.
