A letter was read from the Poor Law Board, expressing approval of the course adopted by the Guardians relative to vaccination; also, a letter requiring a statement of accounts in connection with the several parishes in the union, (which has been complied with). There was likewise a letter requesting to know if Mr. Strnthers, the new schoolmaster, being a Presbyterian, would teach the Church catechism. (Answered in the affirmative.) The following letter was read from the Treasurer: --To the Guardians of the Gateshead Union. At your last Board meeting tome observations were made on my conduct as Treasurer which I cannot allow to pass unnoticed; and in doing so I would recommend young Guardians (however respectable) to be more silent, until experience makes them cognizant of the matters before them. I may first inform you that I am amenable to two sets of masters, the Guardians and the Poor Law Commissioners in London. I believe it to be a part of my duty to inform the Commissioners when the union purse is becoming empty, which was the case by your own showing, when you ought to have paid a county rate of 400 and upwards, and you only had 189 3s. lid., on hand. Surely this is not the way to carry on large public affairs, although it may be the mode our young Guardian would recommend, who says that we should say nothing about the want of money until we are " fast," and the cheques of the relieving officers refused payment, which would necessarily cause an amount of suffering distributed amongst 1,000 starving people.
