The lake is composed of a curious aggregation of bays. Its length is over thirty miles, and its width over four miles at its widest, with a shore line of over 200 miles. At some points its shores are beautifully undulating, while at others bold headlands stand forth in grand defiance. One may sail tor weeks about these bays--and one may become lost in this surprising combination. Numerous cottages have been erected for whilom summer guests; and palatial hotels offer elegant accomodations to the great traveling public. Those who desire quiet homes can be satisfied in the little village of Excelsior, or in the retired nooks about the lake, where the air is freighted with blossom odors. One may wander through vistas of green trees, lounge beside the blue waters, or swing in hammocks and read one's self to sleep. Steamers ply over the limpid bosom of this beautiful lake, and one must ride thirty miles to make a tour of the most prominent resorts. Wayzata village is located on Wayzata bay. As one glides into the bay, directly west, one may discern Point Wakon, a curious promontory, where the Indians were accustomed to assemble for their grotesque revels and feasts round the Medicine Stone, which, as has been stated was colored red by the blood of their slain, and on which each warrior deposited his laurels of victory--ghastly scalps. Spirit Island, which one passes as the steamer turns southward, is said to be the sly haunt of the spirit of a beautiful Indian maiden.
