The tithe of the faithful is the revenue of the Church. So long as the obligation to pay this tribute to God is not recognized and not fulfilled, the Church must be impoverished; the clergy must be few and poorly maintained; the Divine Worship must be scantily done; the people must be inefficiently instructed and guided in spiritual things. No doubt if people generally paid tithes it would be a very large annual charge upon the industry of the people, and so no wonder they shrink back from paying it. But who shall tell us how much the nation pays in other ways because it will not pay it in this. Find out how much the nation pays for crime, and pauperism, and drunkenness; how much it loses by the unproductive luxury of one class and the vicious idleness of another; and you will begin to find that perhaps we pay more for irreligion than religion would cost us. Then reflect how much, the general well-being and happiness of the people depends upon the general virtue of the people and you will perhaps conclude that even if religion did cost more than irreligion it might be. very well worth the cost. T will be known to many of our readers that in many parishes, where the Society has made grants for a long series of years, it is calling upon the parishioners, who have so long enjoyed its assistance, to begin to take upon themselves a larger portion of the cost of maintaining their own additional clergy, in order that the Society mcy be enabled to help some of the many other applications for its aid.
