Before he ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne, his personal name (his imina) was Kanehito-shinn. Kanehito-shinn was the first son of Emperor En'y and Fujiwara no Senshi, a daughter of Fujiwara no Kaneie. Since there are no documented siblings, it is supposed that he was an only child.
