Excerpt: Yuan Shikai (simplified Chinese: traditional Chinese: pinyin: Yun Sh¬ki; Wade-Giles: Yan Shih-k'ai; Courtesy Witng; Pseudonym: Rng'n, also named after birthplace Yun Xingchng ) ( 16 September 1859 6 June 1916) was an important Chinese general and politician famous for his influence during the late Qing Dynasty, his role in the events leading up to the abdication of the last Qing Emperor of China, his autocratic rule as the first President of the Republic of China, and his short-lived attempt to revive the Chinese monarchy, with himself as the "Great Emperor of China." Yuan Shikai was born in the village of Zhangying (), Xiangcheng county (), Chenzhou prefecture (), Henan province. Chenzhou is now called Huaiyang (). The village of Zhangying is located immediately north of the centre of Xiangcheng. The Yuan family later moved to a hilly area that was easier to defend, 16 kilometers southeast of Xiangcheng. There the Yuans had built a fortified village, Yuanzhai (; literally "the fortified village of the Yuan family"). Yuanzhai is now located inside Wangmingkou township (), on the territory of the county-level city of Xiangcheng. The large country estate of the Yuan family there was recently opened to tourism. As a young man he had enjoyed riding, boxing, and entertainment with friends. Yuan had wanted to pursue a career in civil services, but had failed twice in Imperial examinations. He decided that his entry into politics would have to be done through the Huai Army, where many of his relatives of grand parental and parental generations served.
