Refurbishment of Concrete Buildings - Designing Now for the Future (Paperback)

, ,
The third of three publications concerned with refurbishment. It is estimated that 8 million square metres of office space requires refurbishment, much of it constructed in reinforced concrete. This volume argues that these buildings have the potential to provide the standards of accommodation required in the 21st century if refurbished in the correct manner. There are many factors influencing the refurbishment of concrete buildings, and the guides present the main issues from an owner/occupier or developer's viewpoint. They present cost summaries and illustrative case studies and also provide contextual information for structural and building services engineers and architects, much of which is common to buildings other than offices. This volume concentrates on the aspects that should be considered by structural and services engineers in the design of new buildings to enable them to be better adaptable to future changes - environmental policy and legislation, economics, changing regulations, changing work patterns and technology, the building structure, building services and the interaction between the structure and the services.
