Every effort was exerted in obtaining the necessary equipment and material, and on May 13, 1918, just 150 days from the date when work on tool equipment was started--the first Cadillac-made Liberty Engine was completed and tested. The production of Liberty Engines under the above contract was distributed between the Cadillac and Buick Companies. Each concern was to assemble half of the engines complete; however, in the manufacture of THIS will give you only a glimpse of what the women did. Their nimble, sensitive fingers made them especially adept in working on parts which required the finest kind of workmanship. These women are seen welding water jackets on Liberty Engine cylinders. certain parts it became advisable for one concern to produce all of the parts needed for the entire contract. Cadillac manufactured all of the bearings, connecting rods, cylinders with jackets, all oil and water pumps, all intake headers and camshaft drive assemblies. This arrangement was later changed, when the contracted number of engines was increased to2,500 twelve-cylinder engines and 5,000 eight-cylinder Liberty Engines. This imposed the necessity for increased facilities for the manufacture of cylinders in the Holbrook plant. As the available floor space was limited, it became necessary to transfer the final assembly and test to the Buick plant in Flint, after 250 complete engines were built and tested at the Cadillac plant. It was necessary in some cases to buy parts, particularly aluminum castings, from outside concerns, and considerable work was expended in bringing some of these outside sources of supply up to Cadillac standards. An order for 10,000 Liberty Engine intake headers was placed with the Cadillac Company by the Ford Airc...
