Accordingly Books I, II and III of this series were chosen. To Book III, however, were added ten additional selections for the higher grades, including the "Marseillaise" and "La Brabancomie" (the Belgian national anthem). A manual for teachers accompanies each textbook providing also additional material for classroom work. Owing to the emergency of the war it was deemed advisable to eliminate from the series, songs designated as German Folk Songs and Songs from the German.. The selection of the Progressive Music Series has been most favorably received by teachers and directors of music. The State Board of Education, therefore, even at this early day of short experience with free textbooks for instruction, may be gratified with the results obtained.'is well as sanguine of larger benefits to follow. TEXTBOOKS IN ARITHMETIC The contract for textbooks in arithmetic in effect when the appointive State Board of Education assumed office, having expired, new bids should be advertised for immediately. Your Commissioner hn.s noticed that in the effort to bring arithmetic directly into the lives of children much supplementary material of various kinds has been provided, sometimes by individual teachers, sometimes by supervisors of the subject, sometimes by city or county superintendents. Though "practical7' is a very much overworked word, there is no other that quite so well qualifies arithmetic.
