Being a fan of the G.I. Joe collection of toys when I was a child, I was eagerly looking forward to this movie, and can heartily claim that I was not disappointed! It's an action movie based on an 80's phenomenon, and so I kind of knew what to expect. This was never going to be Academy Award-calibre moviemaking, but it was never intended to be. Cheesy gung-ho wisecracks, non-stop action and high-octane explosions and destruction is the recipe, and it tastes delicious.
Basically, a team of international military "best of the best" soldiers are on the trail of a shady criminal mastermind and his legion of henchmen. The chases are intense, action-packed and totally over-the-top (in a good way). There are, surprisingly, a couple plot twists thrown in for good measure, and the script is increasingly diverting enough to make you not notice the sometimes-stilted acting performances.
On the whole, the movie hardly stops for breath, with one of the most audacious chase scenes I've ever seen in a movie taking place on the streets of Paris. The vehicular mayhem is so well-shot and expertly choreographed, it's a chase scene that could take some beating to top. Definitely one of the most enjoyable popcorn flicks of the year, and I certainly enjoyed this much more than Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen. A true guys movie! (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos.
