Excerpt: ... By deed dated Wednesday after the Feast of St. John the Baptist, 21 Rich. II (1397), John de Lethum, chaplain, granted 1 to Alan, the son of William de Warbertonand Margaret his wife, who was the daughter of John de Botyller de Kirkeland, all his lands, &c. in " Claghton." Of a place in Claughton called "Hecham" or "Hegham" we find several notices in deeds of the thirteenth century, and of a family bearing the same name. By deed without date, Alice de Heham granted to Walter de Tatham the third part of a field called Henrifield in Hecham; and early in the thirteenth century Candeley, son of Matilda, granted premises in Hecham to his son William--the witnesses being William de Bollot and Paulinus de Gairstang85 (the latter was living in 1226-7). In 16 Edw. II (1322-23), William de Southworth conveyed his premises in Higham in Claughton to Elizabeth his daughter.86 John de B'desey, by deed dated (Monday at the end of Easter) 29 Edw. III (1355), granted all his lands in Hegham in the "vil de Claghton" to Robert de Haldelegh87; and in 22 Ric. II (1398-9) William de Beselegh let to John de Inskip his lands in Hegham in Claghton in Amounderness at a rent of 2%d. per annum.88 Two centuries later Jane Beesley died seised of lands here.89 The connection of the Brockholes family with this township will be referred to more particularly in chapter vii. As early as 32 Edw. III (1358-9) Elena, the wife of Roger Brockholes, held lands here; and in 1421-22,90 the then representative of the family, John de Brockholes, is described as "of Claughton."91 The following may be accepted as a complete list of the inhabitants of Claughton, who, in 1689, held rateable property.92 85 Title Deeds in possession of Fitzherbert Brockhole, Esq. 86 Ibid. 1 Dodsworth MSS., 149 T, foL 71. ...
