To the Members of the Connecticut Historical Society: Taking the chair in January last after your election of me to fill out the unexpired term of office of our late distinguished and honored President, I expressed my sense of the honor bestowed upon me and my hope that I might be able, with your indulgence, to further the welfare of the Society. I venture to-day to repeat the assurance and to ask your generous judgment of this my short period of service. Obituary. The Society met with a loss in the death of its only surviving ex-President, Henry Barnard, I/L. D.( on the 5th of July last. He became a member in May, 1839, at the reorganization of the Society, and was its President from 1854 to 1860. On the igth of Odlober occurred the death of Charles Jeremy Hoadly, 1,1,. D., a member since November, 1854, and President since 1894. The public journals contained full accounts of the lives and public services of these eminent men, and minutes adopted by the Society testified to our appreciation of them as historical scholars and leaders in historical studies. With your consent, these minutes shall be published with this address. Ten other resident members of the Society have died during the year just closed: Melancthon Storrs, M. D., an eminent physician and surgeon of Hartford, a member since May, 1883, on the gth of June; Elisha Turner, of Torrington, who will be long remembered for his generosity to his fellow-citizens, a member since May, 1891, on the I4th of September; Charles Dudley Warner, LL. D., a resident of Hartford, but well known everywhere as a man of letters and a public- minded citizen, a member since January, 1862, on the 2oth of Odtober; Miss Susan Maria Welles, of Hartford, a member since November, 1892, on the is...
