I gazed again and again upon that noble and beautiful river, so very fine and so very romantic, which, with noble simplicity, he loved above the glitter and the glory of the position he descended from, in order to live and die in the peace of a true Christian on its banks. I liked the sail down the Potomac for fifteen miles to his residence, Mount Vernon, better than the Hudson; how much the day and the recollections had to do with the enjoyment I cannot tell. We had twenty minutes to stop and see the fortress of Mount Washington, on the Maryland side of the river, opposite Mount Vernon, which is on the Virginia side; the fortress is a very strong one, and the views exquisite, up and down the river, and into the estuary around the fortifications, which makes it almost an island. The guns, &c, were allbright and clean, and all in good order. The passengers saw not a human being till we were just leaving, when one old man, who has sole charge there, appeared. I was charmed with the want of fortifications, and soldiers, and preparations of defence everywhere. They are the proof of the security of a Government based upon the good will of a free people, and exercised for the common good of all; and they are the expression of the national confidence, that the true citadels, and the most'glorious fortifications, are to be found in the patriotism and the virtue of a people who are all soldiers; yes, and soldiers who will never stain their armour with the blood of their countrymen in the service of the tyrant; and soldiers who firmly believe, andI believe it too, that they are able to defend their country henceforward, if the world in...
