When we formed the design of upholding that first of all dogmas, the existence of a God, against the attacks of infidelity, we could not resist putting the question to ourselves, whether it would not be adviseable rather to suffer these gloomy arguments to sink unnoticed into oblivion, than to drag them forth to light; and whether we should not, by their disclosure, run the risk of obscuring a truth which shines in its own brightness, as the sun shines with its own rays, and thus shaking conviction by the very means we had adopted for its confirmation. But ought not this consideration to yield to another of still greater weight? which is, that if the Divinity has had so many enemies who have risen trumpet-tongued in its arraignment through the whole of Europe; it ought, most certainly, to have EXAMINATION OF PRINCIPAL ARGUMENTS, &c. 145 its vindicators; and this, more particularly, after an epoch, during which atheism was the prevailing tone of the learned and literary world; during which, incredible efforts of mind and of science were made in the attempt to explain every thing, without having recourse to the intervention of an intelligent and supreme cause; during which, too, a thousand different productions, all stamped with the die of the most revolting impiety, have been circulated through all ranks of society. Since it is impossible but that some fatal impressions must remain, even on minds which have not been thoroughly perverted, an attempt to combat this spirit of infidelity will be neither misplaced nor superfluous.
