Firm Foundations makes teaching and learning easy! It is a comprehensive teaching and learning package integrating the Literacy, Numeracy and Life skills learning programmes for the foundation Phases. The series is theme based and draws on the learning outcomes for all eight learning areas. The new firm foundations takes andeasy teach, early learn' approach. This means that its main focus is to give support to teacher's and to learners in a structured way, especially in classrooms where English is not the home language. The series has a strong focus on language competence, critical thinking and visual literacy. The activity books provide opportunities for learners to make their own discoveries through active participation in learning experiences. Activities are drawn from the everyday life of the learners and are presented in a friendly, easy-to-understand format. The teacher's guides proved teachers with guidance around continuous assessment, the language that needs to be developed, resources needed, practical activities for the classroom and how to manage the activity sheets. The "Outline" grid at the beginning of each theme shown how each activity is linked to relevant learning outcomes and assessment standards, and can be used to plan a week's teaching at a time. Icons indicate the suggested classroom organization. The new firm Foundations Literacy course includes an imaginative Reader component, in support of the Revised National Curriculum Statement's emphases on reading. The teacher's guides include valuable information on how to plan a reading programme, as well as ideas for dealing with reading in multilingual classrooms. The Firm Foundations Literacy grade 1 course also includes Grade R activities, to support learners who have not yet had the opportunity to attend pre-school or reception year.
