Spatgeburt). In miscarriage, the viability of the child must always be questioned, a fact which has bearing in medico-legal cases. The premature birth of a mature child may produce legal complications, and has led to infanticide. Late births have an equally strong bearing in legitimacy cases, and the laws of various countries fix the legal duration of pregnancy to a certain number of days beyond term. Beyond this period, cases of late birth, howtver well authenticated, could not hold in a matter of inheritance. The maximum imposed by the German statutes is 302 days. Other sections are given by the author on superfetation, superfecudation, molar pregnancy and extrauterine pregnancy. The forensic import ance of these subjects is not great, since no statutes occur in which they are specifically mentioned. Diagnosis of Recent Labor.--This subject is treated of at considerable length. The usual evidences sought for are pallor, a drawn look, varicose veins present in some degree, swollen breasts, from which milk may be expressed. Darkening of areolae of breasts. On the abdomen, scars of pregnancy. Recent fissures about the outer genitals. which are still somewhat swollen. Cervix patent, fissured. Lochia present, the nature of which in doubtful cases, several weeks after labor, may be recognized by the use of the microscope. This diagnosis is usually simple enough when a woman, who has recently borne a child, denies the fact. It may be different in cases in which women, who have not even been pregnant, claim, for various reasons, to have recently borne a child, and, to keep up the fraud, have procured ...
