Why with the bland and lightsome 3tep of youth, Helvetian fair one hast thou left the bowers Of sylvan green, in deep and sunny vales, Where round thee opened many a glorious view, Adventuring all thy fortunes to a world That lures with villanous knavery to devour The unsuspecting heart of Innocence? Where are thy nature's guardians?--hath the tomb 'Reft thee of their embrace, and as thy day Smiling advanced, veiled with the night of death The fond parental eye, and chilled the heart; That thus o'er sea and land, through varied realms, No voice of kin to cheer, no hand to guide, Unskilled to meet the interposing checks Of jealous nations, and withal unversed In their conflicting tongues, thou'rt hither come; And all thy promise hang on stranger breasts? What could no foster parent soothe thy heart, Gild a deserted home, and bid thee stay To deck thy father's land in after times With all the virtues that have graced thy sires? Say, down-cast maiden could not Switzerland Restrain thy roving feet, that thou must turn With tremulous and fainting voice to ask Paternal shelter in a foreign isle? Annette. Yes I do love the name of Switzerland, Tis written deep on this divided heart, And wakes an inward pang of recollection That turns my panting spirit to retrace The joys of earliest childhood: aye, and there, Parents that need the solace of my love, And fix their fondest hopes upon my life, And purity, and peace, and happiness, Still live; nor wished I should have left their care; But stern necessity hath burst the bands That nature formed to keep me to my home.
