In just three days from September 1, 1939, more than one and a half million people were taken from towns and cities into the country, exiled from their homes by the threat of massive air raids. One million of those were children, many traveling in school parties and each carrying gas masks and a suitcase of clothes.The streets of London and other big cities were strangely quiet and deserted. Mothers had no children to call in from play and get ready for bed.
