Their grief blended naturally with the black nights and stormy days; under the pall of their desolation it was almost a source of bitter strength to look up and find the heavens rayless, yet it was with a sigh of thankfulness for Beb6's sake that on the evening before they were to put her away in the church-yard they saw the clouds in the west touched with a gleam of gold at sunset. Next morning the sky was clear and bright again, and the whole world was awake and busy with its magic circle of glad energies. The bees made a slumberous music in the willows as they buzzed about the blossoms, the birds were in an ecstasy of wild rapture, whirring, calling, pursuing each other as their joy ran riot, and over the grassy slopes of the old buryingground and along the green paths was a gush of spring violets, blue as the skies. A small band of mourners stood around the open grave, and beyond, outside the enclosure, had gathered a great concourse of the people who had loved B6b6 in her short life and now grieved for her. As the deep tones of Dr. Hudson gave tremulous utterance to the final words of the service, one of the groups was broken by the hasty movement of a young man, who, looking on with a sad face, suddenly started forward and offered support to one of the veiled mourners who had tottered and almost fallen. He did not move from her side...
