Not illustrated. 1880 edition. Excerpt: ...feature. Eyes so deep, so tender, and yet with a faraway look about them, that Mrs. Gordon felt a great yearning for the girl creep over her at once. Mary Larking looked astonished when she found that Mrs. Gordon was asking for her, but a bright, happy smile overspread her face when she heard the lady had something to do with the gentleman at the bank. Mrs. Gordon hardly felt that it was the place to have much conversation with her, especially as the noise from the passing vehicles made it difficult for them to understand one another. " Our room is at the top of the house, ma'am, or I would ask you in," Mary said. " If you would not object to my going up, I should to hear a little about you." " Then come up, please ma'am. Mother is not at home yet, though I expect her every minute." As Mary spoke, she closed the door, and prepared to lead the way upstairs. Mrs. Gordon was not sorry when she found they had reached the top, and that Mary was leading her into a room at the back of the house. The staircase had been miserably dirty, but the room in which Mrs. Gordon found herself was scrupulously clean. " Please sit down, ma'am; it is a rare thing for a lady to enter our poor room." It was evidently the only one occupied by the mother and daughter; but poor though it certainly was, there was an air of comfort over it. A plant or two on a table in the window gave an idea that the occupants had at one time lived in the country, and that they still preserved a love for something green. Mary's face beamed when Mrs. Gordon alluded to her receiving the twenty sovereigns. " Yes, ma'am; mother and I are going out this afternoon, to buy some things with a portion of it, that we have wanted a long, long time, and the rest we are going to put in the bank." ..".
