A Cajun farmer lies shot dead in the Black living quarters of a Louisiana sugarcane plantation. Standing by his body when the sheriff arrives are a white woman and 18 old Black men, each armed with a shotgun; all claiming to be the killer. They calmly wait for the inevitable lynch mob that the dead man's father will lead, stubborn pride overcoming fear after a lifetime of oppression. Each chapter is narrated by a different Southern voice and the suspense is gripping as the mystery of the killing and the motivations of the men are pieced together in the face of approaching retribution. (Kirkus UK)
A sheriff is summoned to a sugarcane plantation, where he finds one white woman, one dead Cajun farmer and eighteen old black men, each toting a shotgun. Each man claims guilt, and all threaten to provoke a riot at the courthouse should the sheriff try to make an arrest. In the meantime they wait for the lynch mob that the dead man's father is sure to launch. Before it's over everyone involved has been surprised by something, most of all the black men by their taste of power and pride.
