Bringing together many distinguished scientists and some top officials of the European Community, the meeting Scientific Highlights in Memory of Leon Van Hove was organized in honou of Leon Van Hove, an outstanding European scientist who contributed to many areas of mathematical and theoretical physics. The papers in this volume offer a recollection of Leon Van Hove's life since his early days as a scientist. One of the most influential physicists of the post-war period, Leon Van Hove inspired new research and work from statistical mechanics to field theory and multiparticle production. The papers also present, from several points of view, his action in favour of scientific collaboration across national and international boundaries and of the cultural integration of Europe where he acted as a leader in several institutions.
