Forms derived from the short tenses of the above-mentioned verbs have likewise a short vowel, as aKptrog, tKKpiroe, EvKpnog (a proper name), in Theocr. Id. VII. 131. Kpirije, and adverbs, as SiaKpiSov, iyKXISov, so Okxtv/je, aKXivtwg. Anthol. Palat. V. 55. 4. 7rXSvo'e, Od. 6. 40. 16. 173. Ivkxvvig, Dioscor. Ep. 30. 3. (A. P. VII. 708.) iraXlHirXvTov. Here, however, length by position is also met with, particularly in the derivatives of Kxi'vw and Ttxvvw, as KXivrijp (chair), irXvvrrip irXvvrpia (washer); see also Clarke, Il. 1. 314. 338. c. The dissyllabic forms Tivw and fSivw, which Homer, see e. g. Il. 3. 289. Od. 5. 161. 16. 39., and the Epic poets that followed him, always lengthen, may be safely assumed to have been short with the Attics, who had already examples in the Gnomic poets, as Solon. Fragm.
