Mao's Great Famine (Paperback)

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe, 1958-62, is a 2010 book by Frank Dikotter, Chair Professor of Humanities at the University of Hong Kong and Professor of the Modern History of China from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Based on recently released Chinese provincial, county and city archives, the book constructs "the most detailed account yet" of the experiences of the Chinese people during the Great Chinese Famine of 1958-62, which occurred under the Communist regime of Mao Zedong. The book supports an estimate of "at least" 45 million premature deaths in China during the famine years, including some two to three million victims of political repression. The total population of China in 1958 was about 700,000,000, so this would mean about 6% of the population died in the famine.
