The materials have been drawn from two sources: first, from Literature, much of which has been contributed by Q. Brown Qoode, Francis Day, H. G. Seeley and Berthold Benecke; and second, from personal observation and study. Many phases of the life-history of the pike still remain incomplete, the large number of published accounts notwithstanding. This is especially true with regard to the breeding habits, and the development, growth and food of the young. Professor Benecke of Knigsberg has given us the best single and original account of the habits of the pike while Day, Seeley and Ooode assembled all of the principal known facts at the dates of their respective publications. No American, to my knowledge, has investigated the pike in native waters further than to record its distribution and to give scattered notes bearing upon its food and voraciousness. Along the lines of fish culture more has been done (1) with the two near relatives of the pike, the mascalonge (2) and the reticulated pickerel, both of which have been 1. Report of the Department of Fisheries Pennsylvania 1906, '07 and '08. propagated at various hatcheries, the former in New . York and the latter in Pennsylvania. Personal observations cover a period of a year and a half and are restricted to the pike inhabiting the south end of Cayuga Lake and adjacent marshes. The observations of others have frequently been compared with my own in order to strengthen certain conclusions and also, in cases of disagreement, to show the extent of divergence....
