The Trustees have been long impressed with the conviction, that the time was fast approaching at which it would be necessary to provide for a considerable addition to the space at present afforded for the reception and proper exhibition of the various collections already under their charge, and of those which may be expected to be annually confided to them. From a deep sense of the liberalitv of Parliament in grants for building the Museum, they have long hesitated to recommend any measure calculated to lead to a considerable expenditure. They have availed themselves of every resource which the existing buildings were capable of affording, and have anxiously considered how far they could, by any change of internal arrangement, overcome the difficulty arising from want of space. But they have been obliged to come to the conclusion that, if the Museum is to continue to afford gratification or instruction to the public, at all commensurate with the value and extent of its various collections, that object can only be attained by a considerable addition to the building.--Communications, p. 17. The necessity for more space for the collections and the unfitness, in several important respects, of the building itself being proved, the next thing is to inquire, --What is the best mode of providing additional and improved accommodation? It has been proposed to pull down the houses in Montague proposed AduStreet, and erect a new wing on their site, parallel to that Museum which contains the King's Library. There is already an additional building by the side of the latter; not presenting a very imposing appearance, certainly, but well lighted, and otherwise admirably...
