(Applause). The members of the Grand Army have seen this country successfully bring to completion a foreign war in the short space of ninety days, with a loss of less than 3,000 men, and without the loss of a single man or gun or boat by capture. They have seen in that contest the blue and the gray march side by side, (applause), and they have heard that old Confederate, Joe Wheeler, say (applause), when his friends protested against his taking the field in the Spanish war on account of his age, "My friends, you do not understand my feelings; I fought against that flag once, and I want to fight for it before I die." (Applause). They saw in the trying days in which they fought, the old Confederate buried in his uniform of gray. Seven years ago his son fell, a martyr to the cause of Cuba, and'they buried that boy by the side of his father, but in a uniform of blue, and over their graves waves the flag of their common country. They have seen the domain of this republic extended until it reaches half way across the globe. They have lived to see our flag honored and respected in every port on earth, and our vojce potent for good in the settlement of international disputes. They have lived to see this republic at peace at home and abroad; a land where plenty reigns and where opportunity awaits every ambition. These are some of the monuments which the members of the Grand Army have reared to their eternal glory and undying fame. From time immemorial nations have honored their military heroes....
