He was a banker and MP with his family's firm, but was also involved in entomology, botany, biology, archaeology, and ethnography. He was one of the most influential Victorians involved in the establishment of archaeology as a discipline, and was also influential in nineteenth-century debates on evolutionary theory. In 1865 he published his seminal work Prehistoric Times, which became a best seller and standard textbook on archaeology.
