,
This is a full-length study in English of the history and customs of the Gagauz, a small group of ethnic Turks who profess the Greek Orthodox rite and who are primarily to be found in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, as well as Ukraine, Kirgizstan, and Uzbekistan. Despite the fact that they are Christians - sometimes referred to as "Turkish Orthodox" - the Gagauz still keep alive a variety of Turkic religious practices, and they have maintained cultural links with Turkey albeit with intermittent breaks. They have now established an autonomous state in the Bujak region of Southern Moldova where many of them still live. The volume also includes a Turkish translation of Michail Ciachir's engrossing "History of the Bessarabian Gagauz".
