English summary: The western part of the Roman Empire witnessed a chain of dramatic events and developments after 395 AD. In the year 476 AD the last western emperor was deposed and in 554 Justinian abolished the Western Roman court. These events, which mark the transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in Europe, have often been explained as having been triggered by Barbarian Invasions. Instead this study focuses on the role of internal Roman conflicts. Western Rome was never conquered. Its succeeding kingdoms only replaced the imperial government after endless civil wars had resulted in the collapse of Roman authority. This study is complemented by a systematic overview of the Empire and its administration, army, economy and religion.
