S. aggregated in value $968,382.78, principally nitrate ($828,487.71) and iodine ($115,641.95). In the first quarterof the year the nitrate exports to IS'ew York amounted in value to $200,000. CHILLICOTHE: city; cap. of Ross co., O.; pop. (1890) 11,288; (1895) est, 14,000. In 1894 it had an assessed valuation--about one-half actual value--of $5,292,793, and total tax rate $26.80 per $1,000; and Feb. 1, 1895, a total debt in refunding gold bonds of $100,000, of which 6 bonds may be redeemed each year for 7 years beginning Dec. 1, 1902; 7 each year for 6 years beginning Dec. 1, 1909; and 8 on Dec. 1, 1915. In 1895 there were 3 national banks (cap. $400,000), and 2 daily and 4 weekly newspapers. CHILTON, Horace, lawyer: b. in Smith co., Tex., Dec. 29, 1853. He was appointed a IT. S. Senator from Texas to fill a vacancy in April, 1891; failed of election when the legislature met; and was elected Jan. 23, 1895, for the term ending March 3, 1901. On the organization of the present Congress in December, 1895, he was appointed a member of the committees on civil service and retrenchment, claims, Indian affairs, interstate commerce, and national banks (select).
