But (a) the greateft fe& of the Jews was that of the Pharifees. For they had not only the Scribes* and all the learned men in the Law of their party > but they alfo drew after them (a) all the Bulk of the common people. They differed from the Samaritans in that befides the Law they received the Prophets, the Hagiographa, and the Traditions of the Elders, and from the Sadducees not only in thefe particulars, but alfo in their doctrines about a future ftatc and the refurre&ion of the dead, and about Predeitinationand Freewill. For as to the firft of thefe it is faid in Scripture, That (b] "whereas the Sadducees fayt that there is m refurreftion DEGREES neither Angel DEGREES nor Spirit, the Pharifees con* fefs bcthr that is firft, that there is to be a Refurre tion from the dead, and idly that there are Angels and Spirits. But according to Jofephus (c) this refurrecHon of theirs was no more than a Pythagorean refurre&ion, that is a refurre&ion of the foul only by its tranfmigration into another Body, and being born a-new with it. But from this refurre tion they excluded all, that were notorioufly wicked. Foy of fuch their notion was, that their fouls aflbon, as feparated from their bodies were tranfmitted into a ftate of everlafting woe, there to fuffer the punifhment of their fins to all eternity.
