Enter SAMPEi/rom the left. He has a gun, and as it rains, he takes shelter under a pine-tree. Presently, Kanzaki enters by the entrance-passage. He has a small lantern under his cloak. As he passes by tlie tree, Sampei comes out. Sampei. If you please, sir, give me a light. Kan/aki (stops). I knew these road were unsafe and am prepared for it. Ha, I see you've a gun with you; all the more reason then for being on my guard. Sampei. I don't blame you for thinking me a highwayman, but I am really a hunter of the neighbourhood. The rain has soaked my tinder-box and I can't get a light. Why, if you still suspect me, take my gun while I light my pipe. Kanzaki (staring at him). Are you not Kayano Sampei? Sampei. And you? Kanzaki. I am Kanzaki Yogoro. Sampbi. I am delighted to see you, and yet how ashamed I feel I cannot show my face even to an old comrade like you. It was unlucky for me that I should have been in attendance on the sad occasion; but I have no excuse for that neglect of my duty. I could not go back alone.
