The Dead Will Arise - Nongqawuse And The Great Xhosa Cattle Killing of 1856-1857 (Paperback)

The story of Nongqawuse - the young girl whose fantastic promise of the resurrection lured almost an entire people to death by starvation - is one of the most misunderstood of central events in South African history.
The original edition of The Dead will Arise, which appeared 130 years later, was the first history to take full account of all possible sources, ranging from Xhosa veterans to colonial police informers. It won the Sunday Times Alan Paton Prize for the best work of non-fiction published in South Africa in 1988. Long out-of-print in South Africa, the second edition of this classic work now includes a new afterword by the author.
Jeff Peires wrote this book while lecturing at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. He later became Professor of History at the University of Transkei in Umtata. With the advent of democracy in 1994, he was elected to the South African National Assembly as the African National Congress representative for the Engcobo constituency. He now lives in Queenstown, Eastern Cape, and works as Regional Director of Economic Affairs, Environment and Tourism, for the Eastern Cape Provincial Government.
