The philosopher, mathematician and physicist Jakob Friedrich Fries (1773-1843) grew up in the pious environment of the Moravian Church. Starting in 1795 he studied in Leipzig (under Platner) and Jena (under Fichte). Fries, just like his biggest opponent Hegel, became professor in Jena in 1805. His liberal political beliefs, especially his participation in the Wartburg Festival (1817), let to a continued weakening of his philosophical influence. In 1819 he was suspended from office, and his teaching license in mathematics and physics was not returned to him until 1824. He was not allowed to (officially) teach Philosophy again until 1837. His work covers all areas of philosophy, as well as mathematics, astronomy and the life sciences. Works such as System der Logik (1811) and Die mathematische Naturphilosophie nach philosophischer Methode bearbeitet (1822) are evidence of a strong methodological and epistemological orientation.
