An attempt for Sega to regain the market share that had been lost due to the company's failed two add-ons for the Mega Drive/Genesis (the Mega-CD and 32X) and the Sega Saturn outside Japan, hype of the upcoming PlayStation 2, foreseeing increased competition from Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube and newcomer Microsoft's Xbox and the system's own flaws such as being able to play copied Dreamcast games without modifications had the system discontinued in March 2001 and Sega withdrawing as a console manufacturer.
