Let’s be honest: you either like Jim Carrey’s comedies or you don’t. There are no half measures. It’s as simple as that!
Yet even his detractors have to admit that in his straight roles in movies like The Truman Show, and (especially) The Majestic, Carrey is pretty darn good. This is yet another “straight” example of similar calibre. In fact never mind “straight.” This one’s doggone creepy!
And I really mean doggone, because Carrey is Walter Sparrow, a city dog-catcher, whose recent birthday falls on 23rd February. His unsuccessful encounter with a dog that has the name of “Ned” on it’s collar leads him ever deeper into a situation that is similar to the one in a book called “A Novel Fate” that his wife (Virginia Madsen) has bought him for his birthday, and in which everything seems to revolve around the number “23.”
Oh, and incidentally: this is director Joel Schumacher’s 23rd TV-film project! (He’d also directed Carrey as The Joker in Batman Forever.) Thirty years ago, the Sparrow part would probably have gone to the late Anthony Perkins, of “Psycho” fame. That’s how creepy it is!

Synopsis
Jim Carrey and Virginia Madsen star in the year's most "mind-bending" (Pete Hammond, Maxim) psychological thriller directed by Joel Schumacher.
The nightmare begins when Walter Sparrow (Carrey), a mild-mannered dogcatcher, begins reading a tattered, used book called The Number 23. Obsessed by the countless similarities between the degenerate main character and himself, Walter plunges headlong into the same dark, seductive world. When the book's main character commits an unspeakable act, Walter is terrified that he's destined to follow the same twisted path.
