A tense, intelligent thriller that taps into every women's greatest vulnerability: the trust between a woman and her male gynaecologist. Macgregor has written an entertaining novel about South African psychologist Megan Wright who discovers a female patient has been horrible mutilated under anaesthetic by her gynaecologist. With an interesting sub-plot in the form of Megan's realtionship with her lover and her family, the main focus is on her investigation into the truth and reality of the patient's experience. Filled with interesting and distinctly South African characters such as Megan's receptionist Patience, Macgregor also addresses the health care and other issues facing South Africans. Cleverly woven into the story were an exploration of philosophical issues such as free will and the ethics facing medical professionals, all of which add to Megan's dilemma as she tries frantically to save her patient and other innocent women. Well-written and with a good pace, Macgregor's first foray into adult crime fiction provides an easy but gripping read.

A dark psychological thriller based on a true story. @crushingcinders
