Schriften des Archivs der UniversitAt Wien. - und die Entwicklung der Erdwissenschaften zwischen Biedermeier und Sezession (German, Hardcover)

This book is not devoted exclusively to Eduard Suess (1831-1914) as a geologist, but rather expands its horizon beyond that realm. In the time between Biedermeier and secession in Germany, a dramatic change took place in the fine arts. Similarly, this timeframe, which more or less spans Eduard Suess' lifetime, saw the rise of the science of geology, beginning with the first comprehensive government mandates to chart whole countries, the establishment of chairs of geology at the university level by the official Court Mineral Cabinet, whose power bloomed in this time, and the creation of mobile theories such as layer theory and continental drift. Far ahead of his time Suess, directly or indirectly initiated a number of these developments and contributed to their dissemination. This volume highlights the role of Eduard Suess in the most important geological institutions of Austria as well as his connections to geology scientists in both in Austria and abroad. This title is presented in German text.
