and being there joined by Biigadicr Fowke, with Hamilton's and
Gardiner's dragoons, marched on the l91!), and encamped that night
near Haddington. Marching early next morning, they arrived at
Prestonpans in the evening, where they perceived Ascamus's troops
on the hills towards Edinburgh, at which place only a small body of
Highlanders we/e left to secure a retreat thither. That night both
parties lay under armsr and filing frequently passed between them.
On the 2ist, about three in the morning, the king's troops were
briskly attacked: some dragoons retreated on thefirst fire, and
left the infantry exposed to the broad swords of the Highlanders,
with whose weapons and manner of tight- ing they were unacquainted;
and not having time to recover the disorder they were thrown into,
they were finally routed in a few minutes; about 300 were cut to
pieces, and most of the rest made prisoners. The conduct of the
gallant Colonel Gardiner, in this action, will be remembered and
admired by latest posterity. The following ciicumstances of his
death are narrated by P, Doddridge, D. D. and may be relied on as
authentic. " On Friday, September 20, i745, (the day before the
battle, when the whole army was drawn up, I think about noon, the
Colonel rode through all the ranks of hij own regiment, addressing
themat once in the most respectful: md animating ilianner, both as
soldiers and as Christians, to engage them to exert themselves
courageously in the set vice of their country, and to neglect
nothing that might have a tendency to prepare them for whatever
