There can he no existence without time; it is its food, pabulum, subsistence, or what it feeds upon. The saying, tempus edax rerum, should be much reversed; so that we ought to say, ens edax temporis. It is more correct to say, existence consumes time; than to say, time consumes things. By time is commonly understood that portion of duration which lasts from the creation of the heavens and the earth to the advent of the new heavens and the new earth, which all Christians are looking for; and by eternity is meant the duration which not only includes time, but before and after. Man has a two-fold concern with time. First, as a living creature. This continues from the beginning of life till death; and occupies a few score years at most, and can be lengthened by various circumstances in which man is placed, which are conducive to health, one of the most important of which is the possession of a cheerful and courageous temper and disposition. But whatever be the circumstances in which a man is placed, whether they are favourable to longevity or otherwise, the inevitable tendency of life is to end in death sooner or later. As the Poet has said, --"Art is long, and life is fleeting. And our hearts, though stout and brave; Still, like muffled drums are beating Funeral marches to the grave." The whole vegetable and animal kingdoms of nature have, equally with man, a concern with this relationship of time to organic life. It is plainly a connected and continuous whole in each living creature. The second concern of man with time is as a sentient and intelligent creature.
