Excerpt: ... CIRCULATING LIBRARIES. The Libraries in these northern watering-places are not of the gay nature of those near the metropolis; singing, music, and the like sources of amusement not being had recourse to at the Libraries in Scarborough. TODD'S LIBRARY, (No. 73, ) is situated at the upper end of Newborough, at the corner of Tanner-Street, fronting Long Room-Street, and commands a pleasing view down Newborough, which is handsome, wide, and well built, "striking the traveller with an agreeable idea of comfort and improvement. It's ground plat, on a gradual descent, is nearly a thousand feet in length, and mostly about fifty in width. The houses have a modern and cheerful air, and are chiefly built of brick. A very excellent pavement, about nine feet wide, on each side, most usefully adorns the whole." The second opening on the left, exhibits Queen-Street, which is wide and handsome, chiefly occupied by genteel families. Besides this, are the Circulating Libraries of Mr. Cole, No, 74, Newborough-Street; Mrs. Ainsirorth, No. 24, Newborough-Street; and Mr. Theakston, No. 6, Long-Room-Street. There is, likewise, a Library attached to the Mechanics' Institution, established here in 1831, which contains some valuable works on the arts and sciences. The several Chapels too have their respective Libraries of theological works j and there is a Library of books of history, travels, &c., chie8y formed for youth; and a Free Library, founded by a lady-of Hull. The notice of Private Libraries will here appropriately appear: the most celebrated one in the neighbourhood of Scarborough, is that oi the Ven. and Rev. Archdeacon Wrangham, at Hunmanby; but Scarborough itself possesses a few desirable collections, in which are several emblazonedjirst editions of works on Heraldry, ...
