And now, dear reader, after more than two years' intercourse
through the medium of these weekly studies, it is time, for a
season at least, to say farewell. But before parting I may be
indulged in a few words of a somewhat personal character. In the
first place, I feel grateful to God for the opportunity of
preparing this extended series of papers--the longest, I believe,
that has ever appeared without intermission in any daily journal. I
am also under deep obligations to the proprietor of the two
newspapers in which they have been published-- The Daily and Weekly
Press--for the privilege of printing, for the first time, in a
secular journal, a serial commentary upon the word of God by a
layman. I wish also to express thanks to many of my readers for
their repeated and generous expressions of approval. The work was
conceived and commenced without "conference with flesh and blood,"
under the conviction that much of the precious truth which I have
endeavored to present is either ignored or overlooked in our time,
both in the pulpit and out of it, and this conviction has been
strengthened by letters received from earnest, thoughtful
Christians, of various denominations, expressing thanks for the
light and instruction derived, and acknowledging increased interest
in the Bible as a divine revelation. My aim has not been ...
